Zirconia versus PFM crowns

A plain comparison of zirconia and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, without advertising one as universally better.

PFM means a crown with a metal inside and porcelain outside. Zirconia is a strong ceramic without that visible metal. Both are used for fixed restorations. The choice is not a contest over which sounds more premium.

What we consider

  • Whether the tooth is at the front or the back
  • Bite force and grinding habits
  • How much space exists for the restoration
  • The chance of a metal line if gums recede on some PFM crowns

At Dr. Majed Sabbah Dental Clinic the material is discussed after the supporting tooth and gums are examined. Zirconia is not automatically right for every molar, and PFM is not “outdated” in every position. Laboratory work and preparation quality matter more than the brand name.
