A filling restores limited decay or a chip after damaged tissue is removed. The material is chosen according to the tooth, cavity size, and bite. Magnification is used when it helps see preparation margins more clearly.
When is a filling suggested?
- Decay that has reached dentine or threatens enamel
- An older filling that is fractured or leaking
- A chipped tooth corner that does not yet need a crown
- Sensitivity linked to a defect found on examination
How a filling is placed

- 03Placement of the filling and shaping of the bite.
- 04Checking contact points and polishing the surface.
After a filling
Cold sensitivity can last a few days. If the bite feels high or pain on pressure continues, the occlusion should be adjusted. Cleaning around the filling helps prevent new decay at the edges.
Medical note
Deep decay can approach the pulp. A root canal may become necessary during or after treatment. No filling can be guaranteed for life.

Is a white filling always better?
Tooth-coloured fillings suit many visible areas. In some large cavities or high-load areas, other options may be discussed. The better choice matches cavity size and your bite.
Why can a tooth hurt after a filling?
Mild dentine inflammation is common. If pain persists or night pain appears, the pulp may be inflamed and needs a new assessment.
