Keeping the tooth when possible

Root canal treatment in Jabal Al Taj, Amman

Root canal treatment is discussed when decay, a fracture, or inflammation reaches the dental pulp. The aim is to clean the canals, fill them, and protect the tooth with a suitable restoration. Dr. Majed Sabbah uses dental magnification loupes when they help visualisation during treatment.

Signs that need assessment

  • Spontaneous or night-time pain in a specific tooth
  • Prolonged sensitivity to cold or heat
  • Swelling or a gum boil beside a tooth
  • Deep decay or a crack close to the pulp on examination or X-ray

Treatment path

  1. 01Clinical tests and radiographs when needed.
  2. 02Local anaesthesia and isolation of the tooth where possible.
  3. 03Cleaning and shaping the canals, then filling them with a dedicated material.
  4. 04Restoring the tooth with a filling or crown according to remaining structure, because a root-treated tooth can be weaker.

After the visit

Mild discomfort can last a few days. Avoid heavy biting on the tooth until the final restoration is complete. Ongoing swelling or severe pain should be reviewed without waiting for the next scheduled visit.

Medical note

Root canal treatment does not succeed in every case. Some teeth later need retreatment or extraction. Diagnosis also distinguishes dental pain from pain that starts elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

When does a tooth need a root canal?

When the pulp is inflamed or infected, or when decay or a crack is so close to the nerve that a filling alone is not enough. The decision follows examination and imaging, not pain alone — some cases are silent.

Is root canal treatment painful?

It is carried out under local anaesthesia. Some people feel soreness afterwards. Tell the dentist if anaesthesia is not sufficient during treatment.
